Filler

Seriously.  My picture editing program decides to stop working right as I get back underway!
Anyone know a good, free, alternative to Gimp?

If you are looking for free-ness and layers and opacity, try paint.net. I have liked Paint.net because it is simple, reliable, and fast, although it does not have the same variety of other extra tools and filters that gimp has.
